What's fresh?

KIwiberries

Kiwi berries are the size of a large grape, green in colour and fuzz-free. When cut open, they look much like regular kiwifruit with emerald green colour and small black seeds arranged in a typical pattern. Their flavour is similar to kiwifruit; perhaps a bit sweeter, although sugar levels can vary. Kiwiberries are now available at your local greengrocer

Apples

New-season apples include crisp Royal Gala and Mi apples

Passionfruit

Late summer yield a plentiful supply of tangy-sweet passionfruit. Choose fruit that is heavy for its size, a slightly wrinkled appearance is quite acceptable

Pears

Flavoursome new-season Williams pears are fresh off the trees. Enjoy them eaten firm or soft. Serve with cheese, or toss through a salad.

Plums

Late-summer provides a superb selection of plums

Grapes

We are spoiled for choice when it comes to new season grapes. Select from seeded and seedless varieties, with grape colours ranging from pale green, pink or black. Varieties include Crimson, Black Ribier, Muscatels, Sultana, Thompson, Sweet Celebration, Sapphire, Cotton Candy and two new types with a refreshing, crisp textured, Ladies Fingers (they look like a white variety of the elongated Sapphire grape) and Sweet Globes.

Figs

It’s time to enjoy figs. Naturally sweet figs are delightful slice and served with muesli, add them to a salad or enjoy them grilled or baked

Fingerlimes

Originally from the Queensland rain forests, finger limes are small elongated citrus about the size and shape of your thumb. Inside the finger lime, you’ll discover juice-filled pulp that resembles ‘caviar’ that will burst in your mouth with a vibrant citrus tang

Both rich-crimson fleshed and white-fleshed dragon fruit are plentiful this week.

Tomatoes

Lycopene rich tomatoes are extra flavoursome and good value late summer.

Avocado

New-season Australian grown Sheppard avocados are the best eating avocado at this time of year. This pear-shaped avocado with smooth green skin has a butter flavour and does not brown (oxidise) once cut.

Sweetcorn

Golden cobs of sweetcorn are a popular buy and a family favourite. Boil whole cobs or remove kernels for fritters, muffins and salads.

Cauliflower

Cooler nights are producing a flush of firm, flavoursome snow-white cauliflowers.

Snake beans

Slender, fleshy and dark green in colour, snake beans are tender, mild-flavoured and versatile. Snake beans are at their peak freshness

Kale

Leafy and nutritious kale is a popular choice for green juices, stir-frying or adding shredded to frittatas and omelettes. Add a bunch to your shopping list this week.

Capsicums

Multi-purpose red and green capsicums are a thrifty buy.

Eggplant

There is an exciting selection of versatile eggplant, instore this week. Eggplants are available all year around but is most abundant and therefore at their best prices during summer and autumn. This week eggplant is available in white, mauve, variegated and the traditional rich purple-black

Asian greens

With their crisp texture, bright green leaves and stems and excellent nutritional value, Asian vegetables are a popular choice. Make your next stir-fry more authentic and delicious, by toss in a bunch of chopped gai lum, pak choy, bok choy or choy sum

Kumera

Versatile kumara (orange-fleshed sweet potatoes) can be baked, fried, boiled, steamed or used instead of potato in most recipes.
